What is Covid-19

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe disease. COVID-19 is the infectious disease caused by the novel coronavirus (SARSCoV-2).

How does the virus spread

People can catch COVID-19 from others who have the virus through inhaling small droplets from infected people who cough or sneeze or through touching contaminated surfaces and then touching nose, mouth or eyes.

What are the symptoms?

Most people who become infected experience mild illness and recover, but for some it can be more severe.
The symptoms include a combination of:
*Fever *Cough *Shortness of breath *Muscle Pain *Tiredness

About this Test

The swab test detects if the virus is present in your body. This particular throat swab test is called a PCR test. A PCR test simply looks for the presence of the RNA of the virus. This allows it to pick up the viral strain in the nose and throat.

This type of testing is therefore highly accurate and will be able to detect if someone who has symptoms has the virus or not. It can also be used for patients who may have potentially been exposed to the virus but have not yet developed symptoms. The swab test will be able to check if someone has the virus in their nose and throat for up to 14 days before they show any symptoms.

How To Use The Test

Inside the test kit that you receive is a throat swab. Within this test kit, there is an instruction pack on how to get a sample so that we are able test for covid-19.

Is it accurate?

If there are any coronavirus on your swab it will definitely find it. However if it does not find coronavirus on your swab it does not necessarily mean you don’t have it. You may have swabbed in a way that missed the virus, or at a time when it was in such low numbers that it didn’t get picked up on the swab.

How long does it take to process the test?

You should get your result back within 1.5 -3 days of your swab getting to the laboratory. Due to the current situation there are delays with processing time, so this can take longer.

What do I do if I find out I have coronavirus?

Make sure you isolate yourself with extra enthusiasm. Read all the advice and follow the guidance here: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/ and if you are feeling at all unwell go straight to this site to find what to do next:  https://111.nhs.uk/covid-19/

How do I find out if I’m immune to coronavirus?

If this PCR test confirms that you have coronavirus in your nose and throat then you will most likely develop immunity when you recover but this is not a test designed to check your immunity. There will be simple cheap blood tests very soon that will check your blood to see if you have developed antibodies to coronavirus. This is unfortunately no help if you are sick with coronavirus right now, or have had recent contact with someone and are worried about being infectious, as it takes some (still uncertain) time after the virus has come and gone for the body to develop antibodies that can be detected in the blood test. Coronavirus has not yet been around long enough for the scientists to know how long it takes to develop antibodies, what percentage of people do develop antibodies, and what it actually means when you do develop antibodies, i.e. does developing antibodies definitely mean that you cannot catch coronavirus again.

Ordering & Shipment

We are offering a courier service for addresses within M25. The courier will go to the patient with the kit, wait for the patient to finish collecting the sample, and then deliver the sample to the labs directly for processing.

If the order is placed before 3.30pm Monday to Friday we can provide a same day courier service. If the order is placed after 3.30pm then a courier will be sent out to you the following day. There is an additional charge for the same day courier service.

If you choose to have the kit delivered to you by post, please note this can take a few days to reach you due to the current delays. There will be a 1st class prepaid envelope enclosed with each kit. For a faster and more secured option we suggest paying for a tracked next day delivery at the post office. This cost will not be covered by Gogodoc but the patient.

The tests are ordered specific to the patient’s name and sent directly from the lab so we are unable to offer a refund after the test has been purchased and the order has been processed.

What Happens Next?

The processing time is between 2-4 days. If you test positive, one of our qualified GPs will call you to discuss the results and advise you in line with Public Health England guidelines. You should self-isolate to avoid spreading the virus. You should not attend your GP surgery, Pharmacy or hospital. Please check the NHS website for further information.
